New year brings annual organizational meeting, selection of officers

Each January, the Gahanna-Jefferson Board of Education convenes for an Organizational Meeting to:

•   Set a formal meeting schedule for the upcoming year;
•   Make standing committee or liaison appointments;
•   Elect a president and vice president; and,
•   Give the oath of office to any new members.

The upcoming January 10, 2013, meeting is open to all and the public is encouraged to attend.

Per Ohio Revised Code 3313.10, the oath of office will be administered to anticipated board appointee Dewitt D. Harrell by GJPS Treasurer Julio Valladares. The appointment would fill the unexpired seat of Heather Bishoff (pictured, left). Bishoff recently relinquished the seat upon her election to the Ohio House of Representatives, 20th District.

Harrell has served as the Chief Financial Officer with the Columbus Metropolitan Library since 2007. His many civic contributions include serving as treasurer for the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation; a member of the Citizens Financial Advisory Committee for the City of Gahanna; and, is an active member of the Gahanna-Jefferson Education Foundation, and a member of the District’s School Business Advisory Council.

Similarly, Ohio Revised Code 3313.14 requires a review of nominations for school board president and vice president. Each will serve a one-year term in that role, respectively.

The new president will assume the office from current President Pro Tempore Claire Yoder (unless Yoder is chosen by her peers to serve again in that role). The new president will then preside over the remainder of the meeting; including the regularly scheduled monthly meeting agenda, and the FY2014 Budget Hearing.

Note: Harrell's appointment is pending the full vote of the GJPS Board of Education on January 10. The superintendent and treasurer are not elected officials and do not take an oath of office.
