String Orchestra students in 7th and 8th grade at Middle School West participated in a Hip-Hop Orchestra Workshop Thursday and Friday December 15 & 16. The workshop was presented by Stephen Spottswood, the founder and director of the Columbus Cultural Orchestra whose mission is to advance a collective of multi-generational musicians of color by performing high-quality jazz, classical, and hip-hop music.
Mr. Spottswood started teaching this workshop to provide solutions to the persisting lack of diversity across primary school, collegiate, and professional orchestras. He composes and arranges music that represents the story of many black and brown musicians and the music of their culture i.e. gospel, jazz, and hip-hop.
Mrs. Ross and the Gahanna Orchestra program thank the Middle School West Administration for providing this opportunity to share culturally rich compositions and arrangements with the MSW community.
