GLHS Bioscience Students Present Capstone Projects

On February 15, 2023, students from Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical School’s Bioscience satellite program presented their senior capstone projects to a group of industry leaders. The Bioscience program is taught by Kelly Lewis and housed at Clark Hall.

Nineteen students participated in the annual capstone project event. Seventeen individuals ranging from professors, doctors, and research specialists from the biology, science, and medical fields participated as judges in the competition. The top three projects were selected and those students were rewarded for their work with scholarship money, donated by the Gahanna Rotary.

The winners of the capstone project presentation are:
1st place - Frankie Nuss
Apple Cider Vinegar Dilutions as Inhibitors of Staphylococcus aureus

2nd place - Aiden Walz
Differences in Concentration of Microplastics in Farm-Raised vs Wild-Caught White Shrimp

3rd place - Stella Brofford
The Effect of Propylene Glycol on the Heart Rate of Daphnia magna

Winners from the poster contest are:
Jaeda Whittaker
Natalia Garcia
Morgan Albert

A capstone project is an independent experiment that the student carries out during class time at their high school, or while visiting a mentor at their facilities. They can work with a mentor, or independently. Students can be as creative as they wish within the parameters of working in a secondary school setting, and typically spend 3-6 months completing the project.
