4th graders have learned that cubism is art that shows more than one view point of the same object within the same work of art. We critiqued Pablo Picassou2019s famous cubist painting u201cWeeping Womanu201d (pictured below,) which is a portrait that combines a front and profile view of a woman in one piece. After learning about cubism the kiddos started to create their own cubist portrait of an animal, human, monster, or alien. Check out how amazing these are turning out!

I never posted any of the finished self portraits made by my very talented 3rd graders. These portraits were inspired by Frida Kahlo. The children used their self portraits to tell a story about something they have experienced. They were encouraged to use symbolism to represent parts of the story and were taught how to show different emotions on their face to express how their story made them feel. I canu2019t believe how awesome these turned out!

If you are new to following this page, you may not know that the big project in 5th grade is to create a stop motion animation movie. The kids split into groups of 3-5 and work as a team to create a movie short. They do everything a real movie production would need. They write a script, create story boards, design and create their movie set and characters, film, and edit the movie. They pick a song and sound effects to become the sound for their production. This project takes almost half the sch

We sincerely apologize to any of the staff or parents who were planning to eat at Phillybustersfoodtruck today. Apparently when they showed up and saw the Kona Ice Truck in the parking lot for the Middle School they angrily packed up and left, without helping any of the teachers waiting for food. This left staff members scrambling to find food during the short amount of time they have to eat. If ever at a food truck festival, you may want to rethink giving them your business.

These 4th grade Jim Dine inspired pieces are so beautiful! Although Jim Dine only used black and white, students are representing positive and negative space with where they choose to place color. I love the way the new technique with the watercolors looks. Next week they will add charcoal to show dimension.

Today my first group of kindergarteners created their own u201ccave paintings.u201d We learned about how some cave paintings were made 35,000 years ago! When we looked at the cave art, we noticed almost all of them had animals in them so we decided to make animals as well. nWe turned off all the lights because caves didnu2019t have lights, and painted with our fingers because cave men and women didnu2019t have paint brushes. The kids really enjoyed it, and their pictures are just too cute.

Hello again Chapelfield families and friends!nThe art room is in need of 2 items. nn1. We need 12u201d x 18u201d boxes or anything close to that size. We use the boxes as our movie sets for the 5th grade stop motion animation movies. If you work in an office that uses copy paper, the copy paper boxes with lids are the best!nn2. We need newspaper to build armatures for the 3rd grade super hero/villain sculptures. Any newspaper will do, even the ads you get for local businesses. nnThanks for you

Some of you may have heard about our class pet. His name is Furbacca and he is a Chewbacca Furby. The kids can earn time to babysit him during class (while they do their work of course.) As one would assume, he is very popular. Sometimes when a student finishes their project early, they will draw a picture of Furbacca. Check out some kindergarten drawings of our awesome pet. They are so cute!

First grade has started their next project! We learned about Alexander Calder, his mobiles, and his stationary sculptures. The kiddos have started their stationary paper sculptures, and later on we are going to see if we can add a mobile part to them. That will be a new adventure for me, so it will be the kiddos and me learning together.
