Athletic Eligibility Update for 2025-26
At the March 21, 2024 Board of Education meeting, updates to policy 2431 - Interscholastic Athletics were approved for implementation in the 2025-2026 school year.
The new policy increased the athletic eligibility requirement from a 1.5 GPA to a 2.0 GPA in the grading period prior to the grading period in which the student-athlete wishes to participate. This change was made with careful consideration to ensure the academic success and well-being of our student-athletes. It is a privilege to represent our District as a student-athlete, and we believe that maintaining a higher GPA standard will not only encourage academic excellence, but also foster a culture of dedication and discipline that supports our student-athletes academically and athletically.
In addition to the GPA update, a one-time waiver will be available for student-athletes who have difficulty meeting the expectations. The waiver may only be used once over the course of a student’s middle school career and once during their high school career.
In preparation for this coming change, we want to highlight the importance of this year’s fourth-quarter grades in determining eligibility for the fall sports season next year. For students intending to participate in a fall sport next year, the grades earned in the fourth quarter of this year will determine eligibility for participation. Therefore, we encourage both students and families to prioritize academic performance during this crucial period. Student-athletes at risk of not being eligible under the new standard will be contacted directly during the fourth quarter for an individual planning discussion.
We understand there may be concerns about this change. However, we firmly believe that this adjustment will ultimately benefit our student-athletes by emphasizing the importance of balancing academic and athletic commitments. We are committed to providing the necessary support and resources to help students meet these standards. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes, please do not hesitate to contact your coach, athletic director or building principal.
