GLHS Government Team Presents at OCSS

This past spring, thanks to a grant awarded by the Gahanna-Jefferson Education Foundation (GJEF), government teachers at GLHS, along with their instructional coach, designed and implemented a four-week inquiry-based contemporary books club unit. The materials consisted of graphic novels, young adult novels and contemporary novels that emphasized the importance of active citizenship.
Teachers Dwayne Marshall, Kalena Falk, Landon Smith and Jeni Hawkins-Newman then presented at the Ohio Council for the Social Studies Conference on October 15th in Columbus. The team led teachers from around the state in a session titled: Promote Critical Thinking, Civil Discourse, and Cross-Curricular Skills Through U.S. Government Book Clubs.
Their session was based on the Inquiry unit they facilitated with students in their government classes. In this unit, students read novels connected to the rights listed in the Bill of Rights to answer the question, “Is the Government Serving Its Purpose?”
They did a wonderful job and were one of the highlights of the conference!
