Retired Teacher Honored with Musical Piece
The auditorium of Gahanna Lincoln High School was recently filled with the harmonies of over 300 talented band students from grades 8-12 performing during a concert spread over two days. The first performance featured the Freshman and Blue Bands, while the second concert highlighted the All-District 8th Grade and Gold Bands. Both nights showcased the talent of our incredible bands under the baton of internationally renowned composer and conductor, Brian Balmages.
Balmages, a distinguished figure in music education, is on the faculty at Towson University, director of MakeMusic Publications and director of digital education for Alfred Publications. Balmages’ visit allowed our young musicians to learn from one of the best in the field, through a series of practice sessions before the performances.
The highlight of the concert series was the premiere of “March of the Centurions,” a piece specially commissioned by the Friend Family in honor of retired band director Diane Ballard, who dedicated 34 years to shaping the musical talents of students at Gahanna Middle School East. This tribute, composed by Balmages, was a fitting acknowledgment of Ballard’s dedication and contribution to the GJPS music program.
The piece was performed by the All-District 8th Grade Band and members of the GLHS Gold Band.
In a previously posted message, Ballard conveyed her deep appreciation for the surprise the music department had kept for three long years. She also highlighted the generosity of the Friend Family, the support of her family, colleagues and hundreds and hundreds of wonderful students!
