English Learner

This service is available at the high school level. In sheltered classes, English is introduced in a way that can be understood by EL students. The teacher uses English at the students’ level. The teacher often uses visual aids, concrete experiences and manipulative materials. Students have the opportunity to develop the oral and written language skills they need to make academic progress. Students do not compete academically with native English speakers.

EL students are together with native-English speaking students in the same classroom. An EL specialist is also in the classroom to support the EL students. For example, the EL specialist may provide guidance to the EL students as they work on a group or individual assignment.

Small groups of English Learners work with an English Learner Specialist or Alternative Instructor one or more times a week for focused instruction on English language skills.

In tutoring sessions either during or after school, students receive various types of support. Depending on the program, this may include homework support, content area support and/or extra English language instruction.

Imagine Learning is a computer program that helps students with reading skills. Students may work on this during the school day or at home. English Learners are encouraged to work with Imagine Learning 30-60 minutes per week. Please contact your English Learner Specialist for login information.
