English Learner
Program Overview
The English Learner (EL) program is designed to support students in the Gahanna-Jefferson Public School District who have 'limited English proficiency' (LEP.) It is available for all students who qualify in the district in grades K-12.
The mission of the EL program is to offer support for English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills as well as to assist with academic content. The EL teachers are trained and highly qualified to work with students needing language support. They follow philosophies and implement methods that help students to progress in learning the English language and academic content as well as meeting grade level expectations.

English Learner Identification and Assessment
Students are screened as possible English Learners if their family indicates during enrollment that they speak a language other than English at home. An English Learner specialist assesses the students using the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener, and students are identified as English Learners based on the results of that assessment. More information about the identification of English Learners can be found at the Ohio Department of Education.
Each spring, all English Learners take the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA). This test is required of all English Learners, even if they do not participate in English Learner Services. Students who demonstrate proficiency on OELPA are able to exit the EL program. More information about OELPA can be found at the Ohio Department of Education.
English Learners also participate in all other district assessment programs, including, but not limited to, Ohio State Tests, Measure of Academic Progress, Acadience dyslexia screening, Cognitive Abilities Test gifted screening, PSAT, and SAT.
